MSF MOTORCYCLE/SCOOTER BASIC RIDERCOURSE
Can I take the BRC on a scooter?
Yes, MSS now offers the Basic RiderCourse on a scooter! You will be completing the course alongside students who are taking it on a motorcycle.

How am I eligible for the road test waiver?
You must meet the following criteria: Be 16 years of age or older (parental permission is required between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age), possess a current and valid New York State driver’s license and New York State motorcycle permit, have 100% course attendance, and successfully pass both the written and riding skills test. All students are eligible for one free retest if needed.

What do I have to bring to the course?
All students must have proper riding gear. This includes: a) Long pants AND long sleeve shirt/jacket. b) Over-the-ankle boots or leather high top athletic sneakers. (Canvas sneakers not allowed) c) Eye Protection; students may bring their own--goggles, prescription glasses or sunglasses. d) Full-Fingered Gloves; e) Helmet; student can bring their own DOT helmet or borrow an MSS helmet (will need to bring own or purchase a bandana ($5) to borrow helmet). Students can purchase eye protection, gloves, helmets, and bandanas.

Do I have to take the course in sequence?
Yes. The course must be done in consecutive days, and cannot be broken up.

Does the course take place in the rain?
Yes, the course does take place in all weather conditions. The only reason for cancellation or temporary delays is severe thunderstorms, and that decision will be made by the instructors when students are on the range.

How can I register?
You can register online by clicking on Registration link and filling out the application. To register by mail, you must submit a filled out application, full payment, a photocopy of your current and valid NYS driver’s license and motorcycle permit. To register in person, you can visit us at our Brooklyn office. The office hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am - 6:00pm, Saturday 9-5pm.

Do I get my license at the end of the course?
Students will receive the DMV Road test waiver the same day they finish and pass the BRC. Students will then take the road test waiver with motorcycle permit and driver's license, to the DMV and the DMV will issue an interim license.

What happens if I fail the retest?
If you fail either the written or riding retest, you will have to pay the course fee and retake the entire course.

What kind of bikes do you learn on?
Students learn on Suzuki GZ 250 cruiser style motorcycles.

What is the Cancellation/Late Policy?
Student must cancel or reschedule their course more than 10 days from the start date in order to not pay a cancellation or rescheduling fee. If the student cancels within 10 days, they forfeit $125. If the student reschedules within 10 days, they must pay an additional $100 . If the student cancels or reschedules within 24 hours of their course, they forfeit the entire fee and do not receive a refund.

Is there a height requirement to take the BRC?
The Motorcycle Safety School does not have a minimum height requirement, but students must be able to touch the ground with both feet while straddling the motorcycle. Therefore it is highly recommended that students under 5ft tall take a private lesson or call the office at 718 599 1079 and schedule an appointment for a sit down on the motorcycle before the start of the MSF Basic RiderCourse. If the student fails to take a private lesson or schedule a sit down before the course starts, there will be no refund or rescheduling and the cancellation policy will apply.

Can I drive in NY with an International Driver License?
Yes, NYS recognizes this license as long as the person remains a resident of that nation. The only time someone would have to apply for a NY License is if they become a resident of NY, in which case the law requires them to transfer their license to NYS within 30 days.

How difficult is the NYS Motorcycle License process for a foreigner?
Students who want to get the motorcycle license by taking the Basic RiderCourse are required to have both a NY Driver License for car and an NY Motorcycle Permit. Students with an International Driving License can still take the BRC for knowledge purposes only but will not be able to redeem the waiver for a license unless they have these two NYS documents. Students who would like to get the license by testing directly at DMV are required to have a NY Motorcycle Permit and either a NY Driver License for car or a 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Certificate that can be obtained from a driving school.
