DMV ROAD TEST FOR MOTORCYCLE/SCOOTER
How much does the DMV appointment cost?
The $200 cost includes: DMV appointment, MSS motorcycle or scooter, car, MSS licensed instructor and a 30-min warm up lesson.
 
When are the DMV road test appointments scheduled?
Appointments are scheduled for Wednesday mornings twice a month. Please view and schedule the next available date under the Registration link.
 
Does the test take place in the rain?
Yes, in the event of rain be sure to bring your rain gear.
 
Can I get To Redhook by public transportation?
Take the F or G train to “Smith – 9 Sts”. Exit near intersection of 9th and Smith Street. Start out going South on Smith towards Garnet Street. Turn right onto Lorraine Street and make a left onto Henry Street.
 
What do I have to bring to the DMV Road Test?
Students must have proper riding gear. This includes: a) Long pants AND long sleeve shirt/jacket. b) Over-the-ankle boots or leather high top athletic sneakers. (Canvas sneakers not allowed) c) Eye Protection; students may bring their own--goggles, prescription glasses or sunglasses. d) Full-Fingered Gloves; e) Helmet; student can bring their own DOT helmet or borrow an MSS helmet (will need to bring own or purchase a bandana ($5) to borrow helmet).
 
What is the DMV Cancellation/Lateness Policy?
Students must cancel more than 7 days before their DMV date in order to not be charged a cancellation or rescheduling fee. If student is late on the day of the DMV test, if the examiner is still available, MSS will make every effort to fit the test in.
 
What are the requirements if you are under the age of 18?
If you have a Class MJ learner permit and DO NOT have a DJ License, you must also bring form MV-262 (Certification of Supervised Driving) completed by a parent or guardian, UNLESS you are 17 years of age and have an MV-285 (Driver Education Certificate). If you do not have MV-285 & only have MV-262, you must have 6 months of valid permit status from the date your permit was issued to the date of your road test. This is NOT required if you are 17, you have completed driver education, and you have a form MV-285 (Driver Education Certificate).
 
What happens after I successfully pass the DMV Road Test?
The day you pass your road test, you will receive a receipt. If you already have another class of NYS license, wait at least 7 days after your road test to bring the receipt, current NYS license and permit to the DMV. You will have to pay a $12.50 document fee and they will issue you a temporary license. If you do not have another class of NYS license, you will receive your photo license in the mail in about 2 weeks and you do not need to go to a DMV location.
 
Can I drive in NY with an International Driver License?
Yes, NYS recognizes this license as long as the person remains a resident of that nation. The only time someone would have to apply for a NY License is if they become a resident of NY, in which case the law requires them to transfer their license to NYS within 30 days.
 
How difficult is the NYS Motorcycle License process for a foreigner?
Students who want to get the motorcycle license by taking the Basic RiderCourse are required to have both a NY Driver License for car and an NY Motorcycle Permit. Students with an International Driving License can still take the BRC for knowledge purposes only but will not be able to redeem the waiver for a license unless they have these two NYS documents. Students who would like to get the license by testing directly at DMV are required to have a NY Motorcycle Permit and either a NY Driver License for car or a 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Certificate that can be obtained from a driving school.
 
What if I don’t have a NYS Driver’s license?
Students would need to obtain a 5 hour pre-licensing certificate from a driving school, then a DMV Road Test can be scheduled.students must have the license for the Scooter BRC, 5 Hour Cert is for DMV.If you are under 18 yrs of age and have a MJ learner permit and DO NOT have a DJ License, you must also bring for MV-262 (Certification of Supervised Driving) completed by a parent or guardian, UNLESS you are 17 years of age and have a MV-285 (Driver Education Certificate). What does the road test consist of?
The DMV examiner requires 3 Left and 3 right circles and 3 figure-eight. Upon successful completion, the second part of the test consists of normal driving maneuvers on public streets.
