Does the course still take place in the rain?
Yes, students should be prepared to ride in all weather conditions. The only reason for cancellation or temporary delays is severe thunderstorms, and that decision will be made by the instructors when students are on the range.

How do I become eligible for the optional road test waiver?
You must meet the following criteria: · Be 16 years of age or older (parental permission is required between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age) · Possess a current and valid New York State driver’s license. · Possess a current and valid New York State motorcycle permit. · Have 100% course attendance · Successfully pass the written knowledge test. · Successfully pass the riding skill evaluation.

What do I have to bring?
All students must have proper riding gear. This includes: a)Long pants AND long sleeve shirt/jacket. b)Over-the-ankle boots or leather high top athletic sneakers. (Canvas sneakers not allowed) c)Eye Protection; students may bring their own--goggles, prescription glasses or sunglasses. Eye Protection is available for purchase on site in various sizes for $8.(Eye Protection is not necessary if using own full face helmet). d)Full-Fingered Gloves; students may bring their own or available for purchase on site, small-xxl for $20. e)Helmet; student can bring their own DOT helmet or borrow an MSS helmet(will need to bring own or purchase a bandana ($5) to borrow helmet).Full faced helmets are also available for purchase onsite, $90.

Do I have to take the course in sequence?
Yes. The course must be done in consecutive days.

How can I register?
You can register online by clicking on Registration and filling out the application. To register by mail, you must submit a filled out application, full payment, a photocopy of your current and valid NYS driver’s license and motorcycle permit. To register in person, you can visit us at our Brooklyn office. The office hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm.

How long does it take to get to Mott Haven, Bronx from Manhattan?
Allow approximately 45 minutes to one hour of travel time. However, always allow additional time because if you’re late you forfeit the entire course fee. We recommend that you arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled course time.

Are all parts of the course held at Mott Haven, Bronx or Ulster Community College?
Yes. The classroom is located, at Mott Haven in a modular (classroom trailer) left of the range and at Ulster Community College it is at the Senate Building, room 135.

What is the Basic Rider Course schedule?

Day 1 5:30pm – 9:00pm
Day 2 7:30am – 4:30pm
Day 3 7:30am – 1:00pm
2.0 Day BRC
Day 17:30am – 6pm

How do I get a motorcycle permit?
You must go to the DMV office and complete a multiple choice written exam, (20 questions). If you do not have a permit and would like to prepare for the motorcycle permit test, please click on the following documents, MC Permit Test Study Guide and DMV MC Permit Help Sheet

Do I get my license at the end of the course?
Students will now receive the DMV Road test waiver the same day they Finish and Pass the BRC. Students will then take the waiver with your permit and driver's license, to the DMV and they will issue you your interim license.

How much does the course cost?
The MSF Basic Rider Course costs $350 at Mott Haven, Bronx (Harlem River Yards) and $275 at Ulster Community College.

What if I fail the knowledge test and/or the skill evaluation?
If you fail either the written test or the skill evaluation, (or both) you have thirty days to take a retest free of charge.

What kind of bikes do you learn on?
Students learn on Suzuki GZ 250

Do I need to know how to ride a bicycle?
Yes. All students must know how to ride a bicycle before registering for any MSS services.

Is there a height requirement to take the BRC?
The Motorcycle Safety School does not have a minimum height requirement, but you must be able to touch the ground with both feet while straddling the motorcycle. Therefore it is highly recommended that students under 5ft tall take a private lesson or call the office at 718 599 1079 and schedule an appointment for a sit down on the motorcycle before the start of the Basic RiderCourse. If the student fails to take a private lesson or schedule a sit down before the course starts, there will be no refund or rescheduling and the cancellation policy will apply.
